Killara’s Family Science Night is approaching us very quickly. On Wednesday 19th August we invite everyone to a fun night of “Making Waves - The Science of Light”. In order to make this night a huge success we ask for your participation in donating a range of resources. We request that these items are thoroughly cleaned and in good condition:

Empty cans, plastic bottles, clear plastic and foam cups, plastic straws, icy-pole sticks, toothpicks, cling wrap cylinders, small and large paper plates, zip-locked bags, googly eyes, pom poms, balloons, fishing line and rubber bands.

Thank you all for your help.

Monday 20th July marked 100 days of school in 2015. We began the day by staying quiet for 100 seconds, then making (quiet!) noise for 100 seconds.  Surprisingly the bees found both more difficult than expected! The bees laid out their collection of 100 items which ranged from balloons, paper, cotton buds, dominoes, coins, beads and ice cream sticks. They made predictions about whether their collection measured longer or shorter than 100cm, and then measured their collections. We listened to a story called "I'll Teach My Dog 100 Words"! Finally the bees made a 100 days news report poster. What a busy day to celebrate being 100 days smarter!

It was so lovely to see everyone return safe and sound after a relaxing break (except those still on holidays or stuck in Bali!) . We have a lot of exciting events this term to look forward to from book week to drug education. Our Inquiry topic this term will be on the weather and we will be involved in an incursion as part of this. Make sure you check the blog regularly to keep up to date with our activities and feel free to comment! Happy Term 3 everyone!

To finish a wonderful term of learning experiences about Indigenous Australia, the bees presented their information reports on their chosen topic. We had been learning about fact and opinion so the bees were required to find five facts about their topic, and also give their opinion. What a wonderful job all the bees did at creating their final product and presenting to the class. Most chose to dress up as news reporters - complete with glasses, tie and jacket! Congratulations bees on a job very well done!

We had the privilege of being able to see, feel and wear a genuine Geelong Football Club guernsey from the 2014 AFL Indigenous round, courtesy of Cameron Guthrie. Using our knowledge of Aboriginal symbols and artwork we discussed and interpreted the design on the guernsey, and the bees were able to design their own guernseys with an Indigenous dreamtime message. Here are some of the (possible) future football stars from 1/2D!

The Busy Bees had an exciting time writing, and planning their Mother's Day gifts to all you mums. They created some beautiful and heartfelt persuasive writing pieces about why their mum is the best. We hope you enjoyed receiving these on Mother's Day. They also enjoyed spending up big at the Mother's Day stall! To finish off their preparations the bees decorated gift bags for you. One thing is for sure, the bees certainly love their mums!

On the 30th April the busy bees went on an excursion to the Royal Melbourne Botanic Gardens. We walked for 'miles and miles' until 'our legs were breaking and falling off' commented some bees! The excursion was part of our Inquiry topic 'Connecting to Country' which involves the exploration of Aboriginal people and culture. We were part of an Aboriginal Education session where Joe showed the bees how to make paint out of ochre and how to create dot paintings, a range of tools and weapons including the different types of boomerangs, and how to make bracelets amongst other things. The highlight for many of the bees was being able to roll down a hill! (Sorry for the dirty uniforms!) Click on the links below to share the excursion experience with us!
